If You've Turned to Old Ways of Coping

In times that we feel completely out of control- times when fear, anxiety, grief, trauma and the unknown are heavy and pulsing through our bodies, it's easy to find ourselves turning to old ways of coping.

Hoping, grasping, for a semblance of control in ways that feel contained. Nostalgic. Safe.

In this time of collective trauma, I encourage you to notice.

Notice old narratives that are coming up. Notice narratives that you're still grappling with.

Stories about your body, about food, about exercise. About schedules, productivity, enoughness and 'laziness'.

Notice how these stories, these narratives, can begin to seep into your behaviors and the way you see yourself. And can quickly disconnect you from caring for yourself in a compassionate, connected and courageous way.

If you're feeling like you need to get your food, your body, the way you move through your days, under control, get curious.

Think about your history, where these attempts have led you in the past, the suffering you've felt at the hands of them and the healing you've desired. The healing you undeniably deserve.

How else can you care for your mind and your body during this time of uncertainty?

Know that if you're struggling right now, you're not alone. If you've fallen into old behaviors, you're not alone. If you feel like you don't have the energy to dig yourself out of restriction, or other eating disorder behaviors, you're not alone.

You deserve compassion. You deserve to trust your body. To find pleasure and comfort in food. To breakup with the performative hustle of schedules and expectations our culture preaches and pushes. You deserve so much more than what disordered eating and diet culture can offer you.

Compassion and empathy are infinite if we allow them to be.

With you in the muck of this.

🧡,

Sarah
